Patriots-Colts sellout means tickets at premium prices

Buy Patriots Tickets

INDIANAPOLIS - Scalpers, online brokers and eBay auctioneers figure to reap prices as high as $5,500 for exclusive club seating to the showdown between the Patriots [team stats] and Colts, as demand for tickets is far exceeding the supply.

The defending Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts (7-0) host the New England Patriots [team stats] (8-0) on Sunday, making it the first matchup in NFL history between teams still unbeaten this far into the season. The winner would stand alone atop the AFC Eastern Conference and have home field advantage should they meet again for the AFC championship in January.

The Colts have no tickets left to sell to one of the hottest regular season matchups ever.

"We’ve been sold out for years. I don’t have any tickets to sell anybody. There can’t really be a variance (in the number of tickets) once you’re maxed out," Larry Hall, Colts vice president for ticket operations, said Monday.

Tickets are available elsewhere, of course, but buyers will have to pay dearly.

StubHub.com, for example, is offering upper-level sideline seats for $167.50, and that’s a bargain.

Move closer to the field and the price skyrockets. Lower-level sideline seats are going for as much as $4,000; VIP and club seating is going as high as $5,500.

TicketsNow.com is offering tickets at more reasonable prices, if $1,200 for a lower-level sideline seat and $1,659 for a seat in a VIP suite can be called reasonable. Another online broker, TicketLiquidator.com, has row 16 sideline seats available at $1,183 each, or row 4 seats along the Patriots’ sideline at $1,071.

Two lower-level tickets were sold on eBay for $688, and two more in row 11 behind the Colts bench at the 50-yard line were being offered for $3,000.

The Colts are taking no position on the inflated prices, team spokesman Craig Kelley said.

"All of our games are in demand, and fortunately the team has played well. It’s become somewhat difficult ticket to get, but I’m not sure that we hear directly (from the public on) one game as opposed to the other," he said.

Scalping in Indianapolis is legal, although the City-County Council banned it for the NCAA Final Fours and in March extended that to the Super Bowl as part of the city’s losing bid to host the 2011 NFL championship, which went to Dallas.

Indianapolis beat the Patriots 27-20 in the regular season last year at Foxborough, Mass., then took out New England 38-34 in the RCA Dome for the conference title in January. That game drew a season-high attendance of 57,433.

So far this year, the largest crowd has been 57,361 for the opener against New Orleans.

Sunday’s game will be a similar sellout.

"There’s no tickets for the first game; there’s no tickets for the last game; there’s no tickets for the New England game," Hall said. "I don’t have any tickets. I’m happy to be sold out, but ..."

Slow Ticket Sales for Bon Jovi

  • Post a comment

One of New Jersey’s favorites, Bon Jovi, opened the new Prudential Center in Newark Thursday night, Oct. 25, in what was the first of a 10-show residency. But, a check of the Ticketmaster website today, in addition to published and broadcast reports, showed that plenty of tickets were still available, including at box office.

Even though a press release from the band and promoter, AEG Live, claims they are sold out. The shows also doubled as the kick-off of the group's Lost Highway Tour. “We’re starting in New Jersey and then taking it to the world,” exclaimed Jon Bon Jovi on stage in his home state on Thursday.

Concerts in more than 10 countries have already been confirmed including Canada, the U.S., Japan, New Zealand, England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Holland, Austria – and counting. Tickets for U.S. dates, which start in February, will go on sale Saturday, Nov. 3, with additional markets and dates to follow in the coming weeks.

"We applaud Bon Jovi’s decision to launch their tour from The Prudential Center in Newark to bring worldwide attention to the redevelopment of this American city, and the economic impact this arena will have in the band’s home state," said Randy Phillips, president & CEO of AEG Live, the band’s North American tour promoter, in a statement. "We look forward to the most dynamic Bon Jovi tour yet."

Bon Jovi have sold more than 120 million albums and performed more than 2,500 concerts in over 50 countries for more than 32 million fans. Their latest album, the Nashville-inspired “Lost Highway,” was released June 19 and debuted at #1 around the world and includes the hits songs "Lost Highway" and "(You Want To) Make a Memory." The band’s 2005 album, “Have a Nice Day,” featured the Grammy-Award winning song, "Who Says You Can't Go Home," and fueled one of the top-selling tours of 2005.

Tickets Gone Wild: Broadway Braces Itself as NY Contemplates Deregulating Scalping

  • Apr 21, 2007
  • Post a comment

Everyone has seen those shady characters hawking ducats a safe distance from Broadway theatres. And a sizable percentage of theatergoers has resorted to what's known in professional circles as the "secondary ticket sales market" at one time or another. Some experts contend that on any given night, 100 to 200 seats to a hot show like Jersey Boys are procured through scalpers.

That the selling and reselling of tickets is a hot business in Gotham should surprise no one. The city, after all, offers a dizzying array of entertainment options, from concerts to shows to sporting events. As a result, New York City constitutes approximately one-third of all the secondary market ticket sales, according to Donald J. Vaccaro, the founder and president of TicketNetwork.com, a company that includes TicketLiquidator, a sort of cyber-Casbah where promoters, show producers, venues, and assorted others sell tickets to consumers. TicketNetwork also controls the software that many brokers now use.

Still, despite the booming business, only one percent of the more than 10,000 employed in the scalping industry actually work in New York City, according to Vaccaro. This odd fact is owing to New York State's ticket scalping law - a law which may soon undergo a change set to shake the industry to its very core.

Currently, the New York law is in the minority in the nation in setting a price cap on the resale of tickets. The current law lets brokers charge up to 45 percent above face value for large events, such as rock concerts and sports outings. However, for venues with fewer than 6,000 seats (read: Broadway theatres), the cap is 20 percent above face value.

In recent years, New York has grown fairly isolated in its attitude to scalping. Florida and Illinois recently dropped their resale caps. And the Connecticut General Assembly in 2006 proposed a bill that would repeal its scalping ban - a bill that, as of press time, looks poised to pass. A similar bill is in play in Massachusetts.

So why has New York stood firm? "It's directly because of the New York theatre lobby," said Vaccaro. "They wanted to protect the New York theatregoer from what they thought were outrageous prices that were hurting the Broadway market." Others have noted that those same producers and theatre owners weren't particularly happy that all that money being made off tickets to their shows was going in other people's pockets.  (Full Story)
